Voices of the Next Generations

Next generations of former prisoners of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp tell their stories

Joint statement: Young Committee of the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme & Voices of the Next Generations Sachsenhausen launch strategic partnership

With the launch of “Generations in dialogue – Empowering descendants to keep memory alive” the Young Committee of the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme & Voices of the Next Generations Sachsenhausen take on a pioneer role within remembrance work.

“Since 2019, the Young Committee of the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme has been able to foster new ways of remembering by bringing younger perspectives to the table. We have found a trusted partner in Voices of the Next Generations Sachsenhausen, which can help us take this work to the next level, and hope to inspire other groups of descendants to join this movement”

comments Franciska Henning, chairwoman of the the Young Committee
of the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme.

As part of this new strategic partnership, the Young Committee of the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme & Voices of the Next Generations Sachsenhausen will build a community for all the descendants of the victims of national socialism, regardless of their statute.

By taking part in regular meetings and seminars, the participants will have the opportunity to connect with each other, share family stories & perspectives on remembrance, but also plan further projects together – So that commemorations go beyond official ceremonies.

In the long term, the goal of this initiative will also be to work as an umbrella organisation gathering local groups of descendants to support their work on the ground, but also give them a platform to be visible & pave the way for future generations – So that the promise of “Never again!” doesn’t remain an empty word.

“Remembrance stands at the crossroads, since the last direct witnesses of WWII and the Holocaust are passing away, while the resurgence of far right extremism reminds us that the commitment to democracy and human rights is a life-long pledge. In this context, we as descendants have a responsibility, and our engagement is more important than ever”

notes Amélie Reichmuth, coordinator of Voices of the Next Generations Sachsenhausen.

More information about the next meetings between both organisations will be published in due course on the respective websites.
